Graduate to hang for murder of girlfriend

SHAH ALAM: They were a loving couple and had a bright future ahead of them.

Irawadi Mohammad was an economics graduate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) while his girlfriend, Norzi Ayu Mohd Noor, was a medical researcher.

Their future, however, came crashing down five years ago when Norzi Ayu decided to end the relationship.

Feeling rejected, Irawadi decided that if he could not have her, no one else would. He broke into her home, took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her to death.

Yesterday, the High Court here sentenced Irawadi, 27, to the gallows for the murder of his former lover, who was then 26 years old.

The incident took place at her home at No. 2-1-6, Block ST2, Apartment Sri Tanjung, Jalan 7/1D in Section 7, Bandar Baru Bangi between 3.30pm and 5pm on July 26, 2004.

Judicial commissioner Mohd Yazid Mustafa found him guilty after a full hearing at which 19 witnesses testified.

"Witnesses had testified that Irawadi and Norzi Ayu's relationship was on the rocks and when she told him that she was going to marry another, he was said to have uttered, 'if I can't have her, no one can'. (NST)
